SCOOP: Nissan Motor Corporation ponders sending U.S. #Rogue production to Japan if it cannot lower purchasing costs.* Nissan seeks an average 20% cut in parts pricing on the fourth-gen Rogue crossover. Some suppliers are being asked for up to 30%, people briefed on the matter told Automotive News.* Losing Rogue would devastate Nissan’s U.S. industrial base. The company’s two domestic factories have a combined 52 percent capacity utilization. * The best-selling Rogue accounts for about 40 percent of annual output — or nearly 200,000 vehicles — at Nissan’s Smyrna, Tenn. factory.“Pushing the Rogue to Japan will add considerable red ink to Nissan’s U.S. ledgers. Closing a plant could be in Nissan’s future.”Butzel Daniel Rustmann AutoForecast Solutions LLC Sam Fiorani #manufacturing #economicdevelopment

The vehicles affected are Land Cruiser, Hiace, and Hilux models.Last month, Daihatsu Japan (Group Company of Toyota) halted operations after finding irregularities. Months before irregularities happened also at Hino (another Group Company of Toyota). It is extremely unusual that this is happening at Toyota, which upholds sky-high manufacturing and quality standards. Whenever we talk about hot new models from automotive OEMs, we're often actually talking about tier one suppliers. Car brands are great at design, testing and assembly, but largely rely on mega suppliers to make the constituent parts. No shortage of cars out there with a Bosch ESP module, ZF transmission and Continental tyres...There aren't too many surprises in this Automotive News list of the biggest of the lot. Three observations:1. Germany remains a superpower with engineering and brand equity to die for, but can't afford to be complacent. Ever.2. As #EVs take over, expect more Chinese players beyond CATL to storm up the charts. E.g. you would expect BYD to be up there soon, since its batteries are used by Toyota, Kia and others.3. On the topic of vertical integration, it's clearly a real advantage that Hyundai and Kia have priority access to Mobis like that...Bosch ZF Group Cox Automotive Australia

Visiting in Philippines, I see not only the custom Toyotas, Mitsubishis and Fords built for this market, but an array of vehicles from China that we don't see in the US. I've attached a screenshot of a list of major Chinese auto manufacturers - 21 companies! Among them, SAIC now manufactures MG vehicles for all world markets - I've seen a couple of beautiful, red new MG5s close to where I'm staying. They're priced at about $11,000. Reviews have been good. There's also a beautiful, blue Foton SUV down the street, priced well below its Japanese competitors. Reviews have been OK, as it appears Foton is at about the same point South Korean manufacturers were when they crossed the chasm and first became legit competitors. Big SUVs are popular here because you haul around a lot of family members most of the time. I have no particular experience with current Chinese car quality, or opinions about the politics involved in their market growth and future US prospects. But once again, it's clear China is not fooling around. The Japanese and South Korean companies may or may not be worried, the Germans are probably not as they will always have their status, but if the American companies are not worried, they should be. Remember, the Japanese companies took over the US market in the face of enormous opposition and jingoism -- their product was simply far superior. If China continues to up its game, who knows what will happen?

The history of the Japan automotive industry is a fascinating story of resilience, innovation, and global success. It all began in the early 20th century with the introduction of automobiles to Japan. The first domestically produced vehicles emerged in the 1920s, but it wasn't until after World War II that the industry truly took off.The period following the war was marked by rapid industrialization and a shift towards mass production. This provided the perfect environment for Japanese automakers to flourish. In the 1950s and 1960s, companies such as Toyota, Nissan, and Honda began to gain momentum and rapidly expand their operations. These manufacturers focused on quality, efficiency, and continuous improvement, which soon earned them a reputation for producing reliable and affordable vehicles. The 1970s and 1980s saw further growth and expansion as Japanese automakers made significant inroads into international markets, particularly in the United States and Europe. By this time, the concept of "Japanese OEM" (Original Equipment Manufacturer) had firmly taken root, with these companies being recognized as leaders in automotive technology and manufacturing.Fast forward to the present day, and Japanese OEMs continue to be at the forefront of innovation, producing a wide range of vehicles from fuel-efficient compact cars to luxury sedans and high-performance sports cars. Their global footprint extends across every major market, and they are renowned for their commitment to quality, reliability, and technological advancement. In summary, the history of the Japan automotive industry is a testament to the vision, determination, and ingenuity of its pioneers. From humble beginnings, Japanese OEMs have risen to become some of the most respected and influential players in the global automotive market, shaping the industry and setting new standards for excellence along the way.#JapanOEM #innovation #determination #pioneers

Competition in the Chinese domestic automotive market is fierce at the moment. As price wars deliver great deals for consumers, manufacturers that are unable to materialise real productivity growth will face a tough future - in the short term at least.Nissan and Honda have indicated that they will be reducing production capacity in this environment, as domestic market share has been impacted. #china #automotive #competition #pricewars
