Starting Monday, construction on Interstate 25 near the area of Montgomery to Comanche Road will begin. The project aimed to improve traffic problems and update infrastructure. The Department of Transportation said this is the largest project in the state since the construction of the Big I almost 25 years ago. As workers get ready, drivers and cyclists can expect traffic to be hectic during peak hours. "We're going to move traffic from the outside lanes to the inside lanes of I-25. They'll begin to see some barriers coming up," said Kimberly Gallegos, the public information officer for District 3 of NMDOT. Starting as early as Wednesday, Gallegos said drivers can also expect the interstate closed and detours at night. "We're going to be shutting down I-25 for two weeks at night to get that bridge demolition underway on Comanche," Gallegos said. The project is expected to be done around spring of 2027, costing around $268 million. "We'll have better ramps on and off the freeway, it also brings what they call advanced U-turns or Texas U-turns is what they're known as, it's just going to help to get that traffic flow where it bottle-necks currently on Montgomery," Gallegos said. She said they've been doing similar projects over the last several years, starting around Paseo Interchange on I-25 in 2013, to San Mateo, Jefferson and now in this area. "We understand this is going to be a very huge project and going to impact a lot of drivers, but in order to keep up with infrastructure, we have looked at our 2040 metropolitan plan and we are planning for the future," Gallegos said. Detours at night will be through the end of August. Drivers, bicyclists and anyone else concerned with their route during this construction can visit this website to find out about traffic information as the project continues for the next three years.
